Two ways to experience the celebration
If it's your first Carnival in Rio, the most useful decision is choosing what you want to experience up close. The Sambódromo hosts the samba school parades and requires a ticket for your chosen sector; the blocos take over the streets, and their routes depend on the authorized schedule. The noise, the crowds and the time it takes to get back can be very different.
If you choose the Sambódromo
Compare sectors by view and access, buy only through official channels and check the date, entry gate and ticket terms. Expect a long night and plan your way back. Check the calendar and ticket sales at LIESA, and don't treat an old post as confirmation for 2027.
If you choose blocos
Choose based on neighborhood, time and expected size. Look up the official route on Riotur when it's available, arrive early and decide where you'll leave the gathering. For your first day, a single main bloco leaves room to discover the city without rushing from one end to the other.
An itinerary that won't wear you out
Set aside one day for a parade and another for a bloco, with a relaxed morning after Sapucaí. If routes or the weather change, have a backup plan near your lodging. Back to the Carnival 2027 guide →.
