How to use this itinerary
Four days allow for a first visit with one flexible day. Pick which days will have the best weather for the views, and book attractions with tickets and time slots in advance. The blocks are grouped by area: swap their order to suit your accommodation and the forecast.
Day 1: Copacabana, Leme, and sunset
Start on the Copacabana beachfront. Walk toward Leme for the Mureta and the beach kiosks; if you prefer the other end, add the Forte de Copacabana and finish at Arpoador and Ipanema. Pick just one end so the walk stays comfortable.
Day 2: a big view and the Urca area
Set aside the morning or afternoon for the Trem do Corcovado ↗ or the Parque Bondinho ↗. If you do the Bondinho, continue through Urca and its waterfront promenade. Rushing through both attractions cuts into the time you have to enjoy them; check cloud cover and availability.
Day 3: Centro and the port area
Plan a route through Downtown (Centro) and Praça Mauá. Combine the Museu do Amanhã or the MAR with the CCBB, depending on exhibitions and hours. If you're traveling with kids or are interested in marine life, swap one of them for AquaRio. Don't assume they are all open on the same day.
Day 4: neighborhood, garden, or beach
Choose a day based on the weather: Jardim Botânico for a stroll, Ipanema and Leblon if you want the beach, or Santa Teresa for its streets and viewpoints. Finish with dinner in an area near your accommodation. If it rains, use the culture plan.
What to book and what to leave open
