Rio has three sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was World Book Capital in 2025. Much of that history can be explored on foot in a day through Downtown (Centro): theaters, libraries, the former palace of the royal court and the wharf where hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans were brought ashore.

What UNESCO recognizes in Rio
- Carioca landscapes between the mountain and the sea ↗ (2012): includes Parque Nacional da Tijuca, the Jardim Botânico, Corcovado, Sugarloaf Mountain, the forts at the mouth of the bay, Copacabana beach and Parque do Flamengo.
- Cais do Valongo ↗ (2017): the stone wharf built in 1811 for landing enslaved Africans. UNESCO estimates that about 900,000 arrived there.
- Sítio Roberto Burle Marx ↗ (2021): the landscape architect's garden and plant collection, in Barra de Guaratiba, far from Centro.
In addition, UNESCO named Rio World Book Capital 2025 ↗, the first Portuguese-speaking city to hold that title.
Walking tour of Centro
The route we suggest runs from Cinelândia toward the port area. You can do it in one day or split it over two mornings. To get your bearings in the neighborhood, see our Centro guide.
1. Theatro Municipal
It offers guided tours ↗ from Wednesday to Saturday, with a tour in Spanish on Fridays at 14:15. It costs R$ 20 (half price R$ 10), and tickets are sold only at the Boulevard box office, on Av. 13 de Maio, from 10:00 and for the same day. Groups are 2 to 15 people: arrive early.
2. Biblioteca Nacional
A few steps from the Theatro, the Biblioteca Nacional offers a free guided visit ↗ Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Ask at the front desk. The lockers take R$ 1 coins.
3. Real Gabinete Português de Leitura
It's at Rua Luís de Camões 30. It's open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 ↗, and admission is free. It's a reading room: go in quietly.
4. Paço Imperial and Praça XV
The former palace of the royal court is now an IPHAN cultural center ↗. The building is open daily from 11:00 to 18:00, and the exhibitions Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00; admission is free. Ferries to Niterói leave from Praça XV: if you have time left, check out the Guanabara Bay boat trip. Confeitaria Colombo is nearby for a break.
5. Mosteiro de São Bento
The monastery church is open daily from 6:30 to 18:30 ↗. On Sundays at 10:00 there's a Mass with Gregorian chant. It's a working church: respect the service times.
6. Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR)
On Praça Mauá, MAR ↗ is open from 11:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:00) and closed on Wednesdays. It costs R$ 20 (half price R$ 10), is free on Tuesdays and accepts cards only. The Museu do Amanhã is next door; you'll find more options in Rio's museums.
7. Pedra do Sal and Cais do Valongo
The route ends in the port area known as Little Africa (Pequena África). Cais do Valongo is an open-air archaeological site; the city government (Prefeitura) reports that 466,035 objects ↗ were found there. Very close by is Pedra do Sal, a cradle of rodas de samba: if you go on a Monday, you can stay into the evening, as we explain in rodas de samba in Rio.
