Plan specific routes
Before heading out, save your accommodation's address, check the route and decide how you'll get back. For a night out, check whether public transportation will still be running, or request a car from a clearly identifiable pickup point. Safety varies by street, time and context: it's not helpful to label an entire neighborhood as safe or unsafe.
At the beach and at viewpoints
Bring only what you need and keep your belongings in sight; don't leave your phone, money or documents unattended when you go into the water. If there are strong waves or a warning flag, follow the lifeguards' instructions. For outings and viewpoints, check access and opening hours before heading out.
If your documents are lost or stolen
The Argentine mission in Rio ↗ recommends filing a report with the tourist police and then contacting the consulate to sort out documents for your return. Keep separate copies and the consular contacts for your nationality.
Useful preparation, without alarmism
Share your itinerary and accommodation with someone you trust, keep access to your medical coverage handy and have a backup way to communicate if you don't have mobile data.
