Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Barra, Leme and Praia Vermelha each have their own scenery and pace. Choose based on where you're staying, travel time and what you want to do that day.
Leave time to get around, bring water and change your plans if the weather or programming calls for it.
What to see near each beach
Leme: the mureta and the fort
Walk to the Mureta do Leme, at the foot of Morro do Leme. From there you can consider the climb up to Forte Duque de Caxias, known as Forte do Leme: Riotur describes the visit as an eco-walk up to the historic site at the summit. Check access and opening hours before heading up.
Copacabana: Forte de Copacabana
At the end of the beach, the Forte de Copacabana combines history, views of the orla and places to eat. Check current tickets and opening hours before your visit.
Ipanema: Pedra do Arpoador
Where Copacabana meets Ipanema, the Arpoador rocks are a place to gaze at the ocean and watch the sunset. Arrive early if you want a comfortable spot to sit.
Leblon: Mirante do Leblon
At the end of the seaside promenade toward Avenida Niemeyer is the Mirante do Leblon, a spot to see the coast from another angle. Add it to a walk along the beach and check access at the time of your visit.
