Copacabana makes it easy to combine beach, shops and transportation; because it's so long, it's important to pin down which section. Leme offers a quieter stretch of beach, but work out the distance to your evening plans. Ipanema and Leblon are handy bases for beaches and restaurants: compare the total cost of the stay, not just the nightly rate.
Botafogo, Centro and Barra
Botafogo connects to several neighborhoods and offers an urban base. Downtown (Centro) puts you close to museums and heritage sites: check how you'll get back if your outings end late. Barra da Tijuca works best if your activities are there or if you're fine with longer trips to the postcard sights of the Zona Sul.
