YOUR RIO GUIDE

FAQ for traveling to Rio de Janeiro

Quick answers about trip length, airports, accommodation, weather, transportation, travel documents and budget.

How many days should you stay?

With three days you can combine a great view, beach and culture at a brisk pace; with five or more you have room for rain and extra neighborhoods. Start with the three-day itinerary and adjust it to your interests.

GIG or SDU: which airport should you choose?

Compare the whole flight and the distance to your accommodation. GIG is Galeão International Airport; SDU is Santos Dumont. When booking, check the airport code, the arrival time and the pickup point for your transfer.

Which neighborhood is best for a first visit?

Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema, Leblon and Botafogo suit different plans. Compare address, getting around and budget in the accommodation guide.

What's the best time of year?

There's no foolproof month: summer brings beaches and festivities, along with heat and rain. Compare preferences and dates in the weather guide.

Do I need a passport or visa?

It depends on your nationality and itinerary. Argentine citizens have accepted documents other than a passport; check the latest official requirements in the travel documents guide.

How much money should you bring?

Don't rely on a universal daily figure. Add up flights, nights, transfers, meals, coverage and tickets, and include a margin. See the budget template →
